The weight of South African Boerboels
Weight is the first topic we will be bringing up because the size of a South African Boerboel might be the first thing you notice. South African Boerboels are extremely large dogs that can easily outweigh an average adult human. Whether you have a male or female South African Boerboel puppy, they both can reach a weight between 150-200 pounds.
However, it is much more common for a male Boerboel to reach 200 pounds and more, than it is for a female. So either way, you have to take into consideration that your puppy will grow up to be an extra-large canine.
The exalted height of Boerboel Breeds
Keep in mind having a puppy that grows up to be this big, grows up fast! Suddenly you will need more space in your backyard, in your home, and in your car than you originally needed when they came home at 8 weeks.
There would be difference about the carrier you used to pick them up. When they were a puppy will most likely be too heavy for you to pick up once they start getting closer to a year.
You have to prepare thorougly if you want to navigate with extra large dog.One thing is clear, whether you get a male or female Boerboel puppy. So, when they grow up they will become absolutely massive!
One of the most impressive features of the South African Boerboel definitely has to be their size. We have already covered their general expected weight. And also on how female and male Boerboels could potentially weigh the same amount.
However, when it comes to height, on average males clearly have an advantage. Female South African Boerboels can grow up to 22-25 inches. While Male South African Boerboels can grow over 28 inches in height.
The Best South African Boerboels
At Exotic Boerboels, we understand that having the biggest Boerboel doesn’t automatically mean you have the best. We strive to train and exercise our Boerboels daily. And to give them the best diet for them to build muscle.
The lineages of our Exotic Boerboel puppies come from imported South African purebred predecessors. So being massive is already in the genes of our puppies. We track the progress of all the Boerboels in our care. It is to keep them in shape year round. So that when it’s time for breeding every litter is impressive.
Temperament of Boerboel puppy
When it comes to temperament there a couple of differences that are typical between female and male Boerboels. Overall Boerboels are known as very loyal, independent and intelligent dogs. They have naturally protective instincts which makes them great guard dogs for families.
Boerboels historically have been used as working dogs on farms. The specific lineage that we breed at Exotic Boerboels are South African Boerboels. So our dogs are also great with adapting into their surroundings.
South African Boerboels have it in their genes to withstand the harsh conditions of the South African environment. These harsh conditions also include large predators such as lions and hyenas. This experience of the South African Boerboel is expected to stand up against.
Female Boerboels tend to mature quickly and have a more serious attitude. They are also not as affectionate or friendly as male Boerboels are. These characteristics are noticeable even when they are very young puppies. Female Boerboels are territorial and very good with recognizing any threats to their family or pack.
Check on Male Boerboels
Male Boerboels will usually keep their playful demeanor from since they were a puppy. They tend to also be more affectionate and loving towards their owner. However male Boerboels are quicker to bond with just one person that they are extremely loyal to.
Of course there will always be exceptions to the generalizations of male and female Boerboel temperaments.
This is why it’s also important to check in with your Boerboel breeder when picking a puppy. Letting your breeder know beforehand the role your Boerboel will be taking on in your life, makes it an easier transition when bringing your Boerboel into your home.
An experienced breeder will be able to discern the type of personality your potential Boerboel puppy will have within those first 8 weeks. By seeing how the puppies interact with their siblings and mother, and how they interact with toys and people are all good ways to understand the puppy’s temperament.
When you already have a dog
Think why to really choose one sex of Boerboel
Another important reason you may choose one sex of Boerboel over the other is because you already have a dog in your home. Boerboels are the type of dog that typically do well with other animals.
This is especially true when you have socialized the animals they will live with from very young so that they can be accustomed to each other. Boerboels do have a tendency to be territorial and assess threats so it’s important for your Boerboel to see your other animals as part of the family and another member of the family to protect.
One of the bigger challenges that may come up when bringing a Boerboel into your home when you already have a dog is dependent on the sex of both dogs. If the dogs are of both the same sex they will be quicker to competitive and aggressive with each other. However if you have opposite sexes when you have two dogs it is much more likely the transition of life together will be much more easier.
